Designing your dream space is exciting, but communicating your vision can be overwhelming. With everything from Pinterest boards to must-have features, creating a clear, actionable design brief can be tricky.

At VS Design Studio, we make your space uniquely yours. You don’t need to be a design expert—just share your story, your needs, and how you use your space. We have some tried-and-tested tips to make this process a breeze for you:

Start with your story

This is about setting the mood—we’re not just designing rooms; we’re designing experiences that starts with understanding the people who live in the space.

Before diving into the details, share your story. Tell us about your lifestyle, your home, and what you envision the space doing for you. Do you love hosting dinner parties, or is your home more of a peaceful sanctuary after a long day? The more we know about your day-to-day life, the better we can design a space that fits you perfectly.

Form follows function

Before thinking about style, think about how your space needs to work for you. What functional frustrations have you had before? What should be prioritized to improve your everyday life?

A client once had a beautiful but impractical kitchen. Cabinets that opened awkwardly and counters that made meal prep difficult. They clearly communicated their frustrations, and we fixed them by prioritizing accessible storage and an efficient workflow. One such example here.

If you have a design style in mind—minimalist, industrial, or classic—let us know! Even if you’re unsure, sharing photos and mood boards can help us connect the dots for you.

For one of our favourite projects, a couple was uncertain about their style but provided many inspiration images—from cozy Scandinavian interiors to edgy industrial lofts. By analyzing common themes like natural light and warm tones, we helped them discover a “modern aesthetic with an Arabic touch”.

Leave room for creativity

While your must-haves are important, leave space for us to suggest creative solutions that enhance your vision. Our role isn’t just to follow your brief but to elevate your ideas.

For commercial projects: Plan for the people & the brand

Article content

When designing commercial spaces, understanding how people will use the area is key. For a recent office project, the CEO provided a detailed staff plan, specifying the number of users, departmental layouts, and quiet areas. This enabled us to create zones that fostered collaboration while ensuring privacy.

Also before you talk design, make sure you communicate to the designer the brand ethos and most importantly a 10 year vision of where you would like to position your brand. If you are into manufacturing, make it a point to arrange a tour of the manufacturing unit or explain the process.

For one of our FMCG client, we designed a HQ office and an extension using materials from the brand itself thus creating an office that truly belongs to the brand and its people and could never be occupied by any other company!

For residential projects: Share your family’s story

Article content

Your home should reflect your family’s needs and personalities. Share how each member uses the space, and their preferences, to design a home that fits your lifestyle.

For instance, we once created a space for a family where the dad, a chef, needed a high-end kitchen, the mom wanted a serene yoga corner, and their toddler needed room to play. We designed zones that catered to everyone’s needs.

Consider the profession of the users

Article content

The profession of those using the space can significantly influence its design. A writer may need a serene study, while an entrepreneur might benefit from a dynamic home office that doubles as a meeting room. Sharing this information with us allows us to create spaces that enhance daily routines.

Budget: Don’t just list numbers

Article content

Discussing budget can feel daunting, but here’s a fun way to do it: think of your budget in terms of brands. For example, say, “I want my home to look like a Rolls-Royce but at the price of a Mercedes.” This gives us a clearer understand of your expectations in terms of luxury, quality, and budget.

What do colours mean to you?

Article content

Colours do have an impact on human moods. While you may not have finalized your favourite hues, it’s essential to mention the impact of colours on you. This way, we can avoid incorporating elements that might feel off-putting. Your space should resonate with you!

Technology integration

Article content

If you’re into smart home features, share your tech preferences early. Recently, we designed a home for a tech-savvy couple who wanted smart lighting and voice-activated controls. Knowing this upfront allowed us to integrate necessary wiring seamlessly.
